In the first match of the Premier League season, Chelsea, under the management of Enzo Maresca, suffered a 0-2 defeat to Manchester City.
The new signings of the London club did not make it onto the pitch, leaving the team without the necessary reinforcements. The match began calmly, but in the 18th minute, Erling Haaland opened the scoring with an assist from Bernardo Silva. Chelsea attempted to equalize, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Near the end of the match, Mateo Kovacic doubled City’s lead, scoring against his former team.
Throughout the game, Chelsea had several scoring opportunities, particularly through Nicolas Jackson's shots, but Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson securely defended his goal. Guardiola's team demonstrated confident control of the game, not allowing the opponents any real chances for dangerous attacks.
Mudryk, who was expected to make his debut in this match, did not appear on the field, as Neto was given the opportunity instead. This defeat presents challenging tasks for Maresca in the upcoming matches, where Chelsea will need to find their first points of the season.
In the next round, Chelsea will play against Wolverhampton, while Manchester City will host Ipswich at home.
