American Marcos Giron picked up his 100th career victory with a win in Antwerp
Marcos Giron celebrates his 100th career win at the Antwerp tournament with an emphatic victory over Botik van de Zandschulp. He became the sixth active American tennis player to reach the milestone, joining the likes of Taylor Fritz and Francis Tiafoe.
Marcos Giron, despite being considered a “late blooming” player on tour, has made significant strides over the past few years. He entered the top 100 for the first time at the age of 27, and the top 50 at the age of 28. This year, at the age of 29, Giron won his first ATP title at a grass tournament in Newport.
Today, as he turns 30, Girone has added another significant achievement to his collection.
Victory in Antwerp
Marcos Girón picked up his 100th career victory at the Antwerp tournament on Tuesday, defeating Botik van de Zandschulp, who had earlier defeated Carlos Alcaraz at the U.S. Open. The match ended 6-4, 6-1 in favor of Giron.
Giron thus became the sixth active American to reach the 100-win mark at the ATP level.
Americans with more than 100 wins
Girone was among the select American players who were able to reach this milestone. Here is the list of active US tennis players who have more than 100 wins at the ATP level:
- 280: Taylor Fritz
- 208: Francis Tiafoe
- 172: Tommy Paul
- 125: Sebastian Korda
- 105: Mackenzie MacDonald
- 100: Marcos Giron
Riley Opelka and Brandon Nakashima are also close to that accomplishment with 96 and 94 wins so far, respectively.
Girón's successes in recent years
Although Girón's first victory at the Tour level came in 2018 in Los Cabos, Mexico, his real accomplishments began in 2021. In the last four years, he has won 88 of his 100 matches.
Girón's wins by year:
- 2018: 1
- 2019: 2
- 2020: 9
- 2021: 23
- 2022: 18
- 2023: 24
- 2024: 23
Next opponent in Antwerp
Giron will face the winner of the match between Arthur Rinderknesh of France and Belgian wildcard Alexandre Blox in the next round. Giron's current ranking is 47th in the world and he is entered in Antwerp as the 8th seeded player.
