World No. 1 avoids disqualification for failed doping test
In March, clostebol was found in Yannick Sinner's system.
World number one Yannick Cinner has avoided disqualification for two failed doping tests.
This decision was made by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
Cinner tested positive for clostebol twice in March, first on March 10 during the Indian Wells Masters, where he reached the semifinals, and then eight days later in an out-of-competition period. In both cases, a low concentration of the substance in his system was detected.
The investigation revealed that the substance was ingested by a member of Sinner's team. The latter had treated his wounds with a spray that contained clostebol and gave Sinner a massage. This led to the unknowingly transdermal contamination of the Italian tennis player.
The ITIA concluded that Sinner was not responsible for ingesting the substance.
Cinner will be stripped of all prize money ($320,000) and ranking points (400) he earned at the Indian Wells Masters. However, this will not prevent him from retaining the title of world number one: his lead over Novak Djokovic is now 2,300 points.
In 2016, legendary Norwegian skier Therese Johaug received an 18-month disqualification as a result of testing positive for the same substance, clostebol. Spanish figure skater Laura Barquero's results at the 2022 Olympics were canceled for the same reason.
