Dominic Thiem Ends Tennis Career with Emotional Farewell in Vienna
In a touching finale to his professional career, Dominic Thiem, Austria’s cherished 2020 US Open champion, bid goodbye to the ATP Tour with a first-round loss at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. Facing Italy's Luciano Darderi, Thiem showed glimpses of his former brilliance, leading 4-2 in the first set. However, Darderi, currently ranked world No. 42, took control, securing a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory and ending Thiem's journey on home soil.
A Memorable Send-Off
Following the match, Thiem addressed his fans, expressing deep gratitude:
"I've had so many nice goodbyes in the last few months, but today, I want to extend my sincere gratitude for all the incredible years... The whole journey has been nothing short of a dream."
The tribute-filled evening also featured an exhibition match on Sunday against world No. 3 Alexander Zverev, where the Vienna crowd celebrated Thiem's career with video messages from tennis greats such as Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer.
Career Highlights
- - US Open Champion (2020): Thiem achieved his career-defining Grand Slam victory at the 2020 US Open, becoming Austria's first male Grand Slam winner since 1995.
- - Grand Slam Runner-Up: Notably, Thiem also reached the finals at the 2018 and 2019 French Open, as well as the 2020 Australian Open.
- - Former World No. 3: Thiem held a career-high ranking of No. 3, demonstrating consistent top-level performance.
Injury and Retirement Decision
Thiem’s departure follows a long battle with a wrist injury sustained in 2021, which limited his play and, ultimately, led to his retirement decision.
