Former Football Star Diego Forlán to Make Pro Tennis Debut at Uruguay Open at Age 45
Uruguayan football legend Diego Forlán, best known for his stints with Manchester United and Atlético Madrid, is set to make his professional tennis debut at the age of 45. The former striker, who shone at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, will compete in the doubles category at the upcoming ATP Challenger tournament in Montevideo this November.
Forlán's Professional Tennis Debut
Forlán’s debut in the ATP Challenger Tour will take place at the Uruguay Open from November 11 to 17. The 45-year-old will pair with 32-year-old Argentine Federico Coria, who was ranked 49th in the ATP rankings in 2023 and now sits at 101st. Though Forlán is new to professional tennis, he has previously participated in several ITF tournaments.
“Uruguay Open will feature an exciting doubles team that tennis fans won’t want to miss—Federico Coria and former Uruguayan football star Diego Forlán,” the Montevideo Challenger organizers stated.
Forlán’s Path to the Tennis Court
Earlier this year, Forlán competed in several ITF tournaments in the over-35 age category. He reached the quarterfinals in Montevideo and made it to the semifinals in the 40+ category in Punta del Este. In June 2023, he ventured outside of Uruguay to play at the MT-1000 event in Lima, Peru, where he advanced to the quarterfinals.
Forlán has attributed his love of tennis to his father, who transitioned to tennis after retiring from professional football at the age of 41. Forlán began playing tennis at the age of two and continued to practice the sport during his football career. After retiring from football in 2019, he returned to the tennis court with greater focus.
Football Achievements of Diego Forlán
Forlán is regarded as one of the top strikers of the early 21st century. He played for elite clubs like Manchester United, Atlético Madrid, and Villarreal. Forlán won the prestigious European Golden Shoe twice, in 2005 and 2009, for being the top scorer in Spain’s La Liga. He also led Uruguay to the semifinals of the 2010 World Cup, where he was named the tournament’s best player and top scorer.
Forlán’s football career came to an end in 2019 after a final stint with Kitchee SC in Hong Kong. Although he briefly explored coaching with Uruguayan clubs Peñarol and Atenas, Forlán now seems focused on his tennis aspirations.

Forlán has already shown promise on the tennis court and could soon find success in his new sporting career. His experience in ITF tournaments and competitive spirit have set the stage for a potential victory at the Uruguay Open.
